Earlier this year in Stockholm, D’Angelo performed for the first time in over a decade but today it was announced he’ll make his first North American appearance at this year’s Essence Music Festival’s in New Orleans. The notorious soul singer disappeared from the limelight due to personal struggles with drugs and depression in 2000. To say his return is significant, is a gross understatement, it’s huge! After his 2000 release, Voodoo, Q magazine included him on their list of “50 Bands To See Before You Die“,  Rolling Stone awarded the album one of “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” and Pitchfork included the album in their “Top 50 Albums of the 2000s.” Get the idea?

To boot, the Essence Music Festival has some other incredible acts as well including: Aretha Franklin, Mary J Blige, Kirk Franklin, Trey Songz, and more. The festival is from July 6th-8th. Tickets start at $50 and go upward of $300. To find out more, check out Essence Music Festival page.
