Girls (one of my favorite revelations of 2009) has teamed up with Unknown Mortal Orchestra (one of my favorite revelations of 2011) for a run of 2012 tour dates. They’ll also diverge for a handful of independent shows – Girls will show up at Coachella 2012, while UMO squeezes in some extra love for the West Coast.
Fake supergroup alert? Two yelping bands channeling punk rock grit will spend a month on the bus together? Don’t tell me they won’t be drumming up the walls, busting out raucous shanties to pass the time on out on the quiet, cow-spotted stretches of road in California. I’d pick up an Unknown Mortal Girls album in a heartbeat – I envision snappy backbeats and a raw, claustrophobic lyrical approach. Pitchfork would laud it as a surprisingly cohesive mesh of styles, bestowing upon it a solid mid-to-high-7 rating (a hair short of R. Kelly’s second batch of “Trapped in the Closet” cuts). Please these two are fantastic at featuring city babes in their videos, so you can only imagine what visuals they’d throw down for their lead single.
You hear me, Alt Illuminati? Make it happen. If/when they do, hopefully they take UMO’s lead and come up with a Googleable name. Though I guess I have Girls (the band) to thank for tangentially leading me to this two-parts-hilarious, one-part-bitter gem: Why There Are No Girls in SF.
