You might say Gardens and Villa “broke out” in 2011. After releasing their self-titled debut on the highly reputable Secretly Canadian label (that includes Yeasayer, The War On Drugs, and Nite Jewel), they toured extensively stopping at SXSW, Coachella, Snowball and soon Sasquatch, alongside performing with The Shins and Fanfarlo. The group comprised of five college friends from Santa Barbara, came together after the breakup of a noisier post-punk band; but, elements of the previous band remain on guitar pumping tracks like “Spacetime.” The group describes their new sound as “coco vibes.” That might be the best explanation of the mellowed surf rock vocals backed with psychedelic funk on tracks like “Orange Blossom.”

We met the group at this year’s SXSW, where they were talking shop with Polica about co-remixes (which would be amazing). For those intrigued, get a first hand taste tonight at The New Parish. We’re giving away a pair of tickets on our mobile app, which if you haven’t (and you call yourself a music lover), you should download.

Take a listen to “Orange Blossom” below and “Spacetime” at the bottom.
