When I saw Big Freedia play with Spank Rock on the Check Yo Ponytail tour, I would have never picked her to explode into public consciousness quite the way she has. Not for lack of talent or enthusiasm – she has both in spades – but because you wouldn’t expect the morals of a gender-ambiguous artist with a scandalous hit like “Azz Everywhere” to pierce the bubble that is America’s riskless pop culture narrative. Thankfully, Jimmy Kimmel and his booking crew disagree with me, and Freedia and co. rocked a show for the family demographic on national TV over the weekend. They had to make some concessions to on-air decency – I distinctly remember those backup dancers wearing 98% less pants fabric at the show in SF – but Freedia still represents the loose & loony attitude of the Sissy Bounce movement well, against too-clothed odds.
