Emo's in Austin, TX will close.

Billboard reports the impending closure and relocation of Emo’s, an icon of Austin, TX’s music scene for nearly two decades. Owner Frank Hendrix cited increased competition as a factor for the move, telling Billboard, “We were going the way of CBGB’s. When Moody Theatre moved downtown, it raised the bar for everybody.”

But all is not lost. The recently opened Emo’s East will house the vibrant Emo’s fanbase while Hendrix preps a new downtown location for the club. The spiritual successor to the famed venue will sprout up at a yet-to-be-announced address, though we know it’ll be nearby. “If you were standing in front of Emo’s…you could throw a rock to it.” He makes clear that fans will return to a familiar atmosphere when the downtown location reestablishes:  “What makes a venue a venue is not four walls, it’s the people and the community that support it. We haven’t lost our spirit. We’re still Emo’s.”
